She has neither aspiration nor emotion and her smile is sarcastic. Eun-jo is a girl who has apathy toward life. Her mother, who has been living as a single mother for 18 years, finally found the right person to marry and brought Eun-jo into the stepfather’s house. A decent house and a decent family... Eun-jo feels that everything in this house does not fit for her. The most unbearable thing she faces is the stepsister Hyo-sun, who is the apple of her father’s eyes and beloved by everyone in the house. Hyo-sun also takes away the mind of Eun-jo’s mother, just like her bright and untainted character attracted all the other people. Eun-jo cannot tolerate this situation, since she lost the only one that she completely owned. She sets her mind on getting even with Hyo-sun.

His main purpose was not so much to rob but to search for the owner of a specially designed sword which he saw as a child was used to kill his father, a loyal subject of the emperor. Eun Chae is a government official's daughter who despite her upbringing has a lot of empathy towards the poor. She met Iljimae by chance and couldn't help admiring him for what he stood for even though she had never seen his face.

In 1976, on the southern island of Yamijima, the sea turns red, a siren begins wailing -- and all but one of the inhabitants disappear. The sole survivor is discovered with his mind gone and his eyes bulging with terror. Twenty-nine years later, Shinichi, a mild-mannered freelance writer, comes to live on the island with his grown daughter, Yuki, and his young son, Hideo. Shinichi hopes that the change of scenery will heal his sickly son. They are greeted on their arrival by the kindly Dr. Minamida, but the other inhabitants stare at them blankly, sullenly. Their house, deep in the forest, has not been inhabited in years -- and looks it. A neighbor lady comes calling and offers Yuki advice with a frazzled urgency: Don't walk alone at night, don't go to the steel tower on the hill -- and if the siren on the tower sounds, don't go outside. Yuki learns that her new home has other . . . peculiarities, including a sinister folk religion, strange graffiti, and an eerie folk song. Meanwhile, Hideo keeps wandering off. Then one day the siren starts wailing . . . and Yuki finds out what all the warnings really mean.
