In the early 20th century in China, Chan Zan travels to Shanghai with his younger sister in search of a new life after their home village is destroyed by a group of bandits. He notices that Shanghai is divided into an international settlement under the control of various foreign powers, such as Britain and Japan. Besides, he observes that the martial artists' community in Shanghai is marred with disunity and the various schools are pursuing their individual goals. That reflects the state of China: the Chinese are individualistic and often in internal conflict with their fellow countrymen, instead of uniting to drive out their common enemies (the foreigners) and regain sovereignty of their nation. Fok Yuen-gap, founder of Ching-mou School, is trying hard to persuade and influence the other schools to unite under a common purpose of defending China from foreign intrusion. Chan takes up the job of a rickshaw puller and a coolie to earn a living in Shanghai. Once, he saves the famous singer Yi-kiu from some ruffians and is invited to join the notorious Green Gang through her introduction. Chan proves himself to be the best fighter in the gang and wins the favour of the boss Choi Luk-kan.

Yagyu Sekishusai is a consumate swordsman teaching the Yagyu Shinkage style of fencing from his family dojo. His ambition has always been to achieve fame for the Yagyu clan. His son Munenori hangs around with the local ninja children and frequently avoids practice to do so. As a result, the father considers the son to be weak and is harsh and disparaging both in training and personal life. After Munenori's older brother is injured during the Battle of Sekigahara, Sekishusai decides to name his grandson Hyogonosuke as his successor as head of the Yagyu Shinkage school, considering Munenori to be unworthy of the position. Munenori witnesses his 'mutodori' technique of unarmed combat against a weapon-bearing opponent & then sets out to develop his own style based not on the desire to kill but to defend one's self. He becomes a master in his own right while forming a strong alliance with the Tokugawa who ascend to take power in the land. Munenori becomes a highly-placed key vassal for the Tokugawa, initially as sword instructor & then as Minister of Justice. He also helps to institute the draconian policies of suppression designed to quell any opposition to Tokugawa rule thereby bringing peace to the nation. This viewpoint is not appreciated by his son Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi who is opposed to what he sees as underhanded tactics, regardless of their eventual results 'for the greater good'. Father and son must put aside their differences in order to confront a plot that could de-stabilise the country.

Ten Tigers of Guangdong is about a group of ten Chinese martial artists from Guangdong Province during the Qing dynasty in China. They were said to be the best fighters in southern China at the time. The Ten Tigers were Thit Kew Sam, Wong Yein Lam, Wong Khei Yin, Su Hak Fu, Su Hut Yee, Chow Thye, Tham Chai Wen, Wong Cheng Ho, Tit Chee Chan, and See Yu Leong. Thit Kew Sam was the foremost of the Ten Guangdong Tigers. Thit Kew Sam, which literally means "Iron Bridge Three", was his nickname because his arms were very powerful; his actual name was Leong Khuen. His internal force came mainly from his training of Thit Seen Khuen, or Iron Wire Set. Wong Yein Lam was a master of Hap Ka (Family of Knights) Kungfu. Hap Ka Kungfu originated from Lama Kungfu of Tibet, but had been modified and taught by Shaolin monks or lay masters. Wong Yein Lam's teacher was a Shaolin monk called Sheng Loong. Wong Khei Yin was a disciple of Luk Ah Choy and the father of Wong Fei Hoong. His was well known for his "no-shadow kicks". Su Hak Fu was a master of the Black Tiger Style. He was good at the tiger-claw. "Hak Fu" actually means "Black Tiger"; it is uncertain whether it was his real name or nickname. Su Hut Yee, which means Beggar Su, was originally rich but squandered away his money. He was a master of Hoong Ka Kungfu. He learned from Chan Fook, a monk from the southern Shaolin Monastery, and was probably the same Chan Fook who started my lineage from Uncle Righteousness. Chow Thye was well known for his staff, known as Tai Cho Chooi Wan Khun, or "Soul-Chasing Staff of the First Emperor". He shot to fame when he defeated an international boxing champion from France. Tham Chai Wen was known as "Three-Leg Tham" because of his three kicking techniques. They were tiger-tail kick, weeping-floor kick, and organ-seeking kick. Wong Cheng Ho was famous for his Iron Head. He learned his kungfu in a Guangdong temple from a monk belonging to the Shaolin tradition. Tit Chee Chan means "Iron Finger Chan"; his real name was unknown. Naturally, he was expert at the Iron Finger Art. See Yu Leong was known for the Red Sand Palm. This is an advanced Shaolin art using internal force which leaves a red mark on the skin of an opponent after being struck.
